EFICOR Kerala Flood Relief Update 9

Mrs. Ponnama’s equally aged husband is bed-ridden to due to age-related poor health. Despite a frail and wrinkled appearance, her life highlights her strong resolve and commitment for her family as one can find upon listening to her life’s story. Mrs. Ponnamma has three middle-aged sons, Suresh, Akhil and Madhu all of whom are suffering from intellectual disability that prevented them from acquiring the appropriate conceptual, social and practical skills associated with their age. This left her and her husband, as long as he was able, with the extremely painful yet necessary task of caring for their children as long as they could despite their sons being full adults in physique. With her husband bedridden, the responsibility fell upon her to find work and provide for her cherished family. Adding on to her burden were the recent floods in Kerala caused by the heavy rains that lashed the state in the month of August 2018. The rising water level forced them to flee to a relief camp set up in a nearby church. After 10 days of staying in this camp, the waters had sufficiently reduced to enable them to return home but alas, she was totally shattered to find her house in chaos, in need of full scale overhaul which was far beyond what she could ever afford. Reduced to nothing but grief and a plea for help she is gradually finding help in the relief work being done by EFICOR, which has distributed food grains and other relief items. Burdened with the various bags handed to her but with joy she called her son, who till then was wandering about on the road nearby, and slowly moved away with the comfort that for some more days she could now at least provide food for her family.
