Conference Of Parties (COP) 22

The COP22 summit of the parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held in the African land of Marrakech, Morocco from 7th to 18th November 2016. The COP was deemed as a historic starting point as it also serves as the first meeting of the parties of the Paris Agreement signed during the COP21 summit in Paris last year. India has ratified the Paris Agreement on the 2nd October 2016 signaling that it’s important for an international treaty. The COP22 President Mr. Salaheddine Mezouar, in his inaugural message mentioned the need to strengthen the support mechanisms to tackle climate change among the developing and most vulnerable countries around the globe.

Indian negotiation team was led by Shri. Anil Madhav Dave, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He along with his 18-member team negotiated for a proper road map to implement the Paris Agreement. India Pavilion hosted number of side events in support of Paris Agreement. India’s focus on adopting a low carbon lifestyle was visible in its pavilion display. The conference concluded on 18th October 2016 with the parties unanimously agreeing to the outcome called “Marrakech Action Proclamation’ (https://unfccc.int/files/meetings/marrakech_nov_2016/application/pdf/marrakech_action_proclamation.pdf) which is worth reading and understanding further.

Mr. Ramesh Babu has written a Blog for Tearfund UK, one of our supporting partners expressing his views on the Conference, which can be accessed at https://justpolicy.co.uk/2016/11/23/from-indias-villages-to-the-moroccos-talks/
