Bihar – Flood Relief update – 2 (29th August 2017)

Bihar is continuing to reel under floodwater. Low-lying villages are still inundated and embankment and relief camps are lifelines for the flood-hit villagers who are mostly poor and agricultural labourers. The devastating floods having snatched away everything, the victims have taken refuge in these embankments, highways and relief camps clutching their meagre belongings. Some have managed to rescue their animals now tied to a bamboo keel by the side of their shanties. Blank wooden cots, torn plastic mats, a few utensils and earthen stove make up the rest of their possessions. As EFICOR teams visit some of these places, people are complaining about the apathy of the government and pouring out about their struggle in survival. People are saying that it is the worst flood in the recent memory. The death toll1 has raised to 514 (as on August 28, 2017) officially. 17.1 million people from 187 blocks of 2371 Panchayats in 19 districts were affected by the deluge.
EFICOR will be providing 500 dry food packets to 500 families in East Champaran district on 30th August 2017. Over all, EFICOR intends to support 10,000 households with food and non-food items in East Champaran, Madhubani and Katihar districts as per the need. The food basket includes Rice, Wheat Flour, Dal, Oil, Salt, Beaten Rice, Jaggery and non-food items include Blankets/bed sheets, Sleeping mats, Mosquito nets and Hygiene kits.
