EFICOR completed its 2nd phase of relief operation in the 3 districts of Bihar –benefiting 3200 community members in 17 wards of Barhara Gram Panchayat and 12 wards of Belhi Gram Panchayat belonging to the Marauna Block in Supual district. 1200 community members from 6 Gram panchayats in 4 blocks v.i.z. Barganiya, Suppi, Majorganj and Dumra in Sitamarhi and 5600 community members in 4 Gram Panchayats – Deora, Orha, Parida and Rampur in Hasanpur block in Samastipur district. The whole of Hasanpur block consisting of 20 Gram Panchayats has been under water for 3 months since June and the houses still remain submerged under water. According to locals the water will be there for another 3 months. This has caused havoc in the lives of the people as cultivable areas have been flooded resulting in destruction of crops, cattles and houses. People are taking refuge on the railway tracks, schools and panchayat bhawans and many have lost their work and daily wages leaving them starving and begging.
EFICOR’s main focus has been old people, physically challenged, pregnant women, backward caste and even socially ostracised class like lepers and beggers.
EFICOR provided the flood victims with food and non food materials as per the Sphere standards (provide link to the site www.sphereproject.org ) taking into consideration the local food culture to ensure sustenance of 10,000 affected families and to prevent them from resorting to harmful coping strategies like borrowing money from money lenders and selling household goods etc. The commodities include 15 kg of rice, 20 kg of wheat, 2 kg of sattu, 4 kg of pulses, 2 litres of oil, ˝ kg of salt, match stick, candles, spices and soaps. One of the beneficiaries after receiving the materials quoted, “God has sent you here. Thanks that people like you have come to such interior places and have given food to the poor people like us. God bless you.” In Nirmali the Sub divisional Magistrate who was present at the distribution quoted, “This is the first time any NGO has come here. We appreciate EFICOR for choosing such a place to do the relief distribution.”
