Jhansi Sustainable Development Project

Thirty nine year old Mr. Kriparam’s 4 bigha undulated rain fed land in village Jarhakhurd, Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh was barren due to prevailing drought situation in Bundelkhand region. With six members in his family, he makes his end meet by working as a daily labourer and had debts too.

As.1EFICOR’s Jhansi Sustainable Development Project constructed a Check Dam near to his farm and imparted training on new methods of farming with the assistance of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jhansi. Soon after the training, he cultivated paddy in 2 bigha land for the first time in his field and planted brinjal, tomato, chillies, coriander leaves and groundnuts in 600 square feet land. He applied NADEP compost and bio- pesticide prepared from Neem tree as he learnt in the training. The family got a good yield from the vegetable garden which lasted for 6 months and harvested 450 kgs (4.5 quintals) of paddy from his land.

He sold Rs. 3500 worth of vegetables and 250 kgs of paddy worth Rs. 5750 in the local market at Moth town. The family has kept 250 kg of rice for their consumption for 3 months and also paid back the loan. Many are inspired by seeing the transformation in the life of Kriparam and two people in his village have requested EFICOR’s staff to teach them how to make NADEP compost pit and to get connected with KVK.
